The Global Standard for Railway Engineering Safety Management

Universal Principles in Engineering Safety Management

iESM is the international rail industry's handbook on Engineering Safety Management. It is a single universal set of good practice that can be applied to railways around the world.

iESM takes into account a number of key sources:

  • Alignment with key industry requirements and standards including Common Safety Methods on Risk Evaluation and Assessment and CENELEC Standards EN 50126/8/9

  • Published literature on Engineering Safety Management from different safety critical industries

  • Practical experience of undertaking Engineering Safety Management throughout the life cycle - from delivery of projects to ongoing operation and maintenance

iESM is supported by an international working group that includes
representatives from major rail organisations around the world

Due to a global desire to maintain some consistency in the field of Engineering Safety Management, and to keep this information up to date and supplied as a common shared resource, the management of iESM is an international collaboration involving a number of high profile rail organisations who provide their valuable input to the content of iESM.

  • The iESM working group are responsible for overseeing the production and update to iESM

  • If you use any of the iESM guidance, you must make sure that it suitable for your project and adapt it where necessary

Training Courses for all Levels and Requirements

A range of training courses are available from a select group of training organisations. These include on-line courses and in-person workshops. Not only do the training courses provide an opportunity to upskill, they also provide a forum for networking and to hear from iESM expert practitioners on practical methods to implement the iESM Principles and Process to your specific needs.
